Forgotten wallet password
The .wallet file exists but will not open. Assessed like any password case: feasibility follows what you recall.
Electrum has its own seed standard and a long history of file formats, which is why an Electrum backup often fails in other wallets while remaining perfectly recoverable in the right client.
Electrum does not use BIP39. Its seeds carry a version marker inside the seed itself, distinguishing old (pre-2.0) seeds, standard segwit seeds and 2FA seeds. A perfectly valid Electrum seed will usually be rejected by a BIP39-only wallet, which leads many owners to believe their backup is broken when it is not.
On disk, an Electrum wallet is a JSON file in the wallets directory. Password protection may encrypt only the private keys or the whole file, depending on version and settings. Either way the file itself is the artefact worth preserving.
Electrum also supports an optional seed extension — its own equivalent of a passphrase — which produces a different wallet when forgotten, exactly like the hardware-wallet case.

Usually an old Electrum seed format rather than a corrupted backup. The matching client version can read it.
Files from early versions can normally still be opened, sometimes only after identifying the originating version.
Electrum's optional extra word, producing a different wallet when wrong.
Often a script-type mismatch — legacy, p2sh-segwit or native segwit addresses derived differently.
Two-factor Electrum wallets involve a co-signing service and have their own restore path using the seed.
Because Electrum seeds are not BIP39. Restore them in Electrum, then move funds to a new wallet if you want a BIP39 backup.
Only through a constrained password search. Depending on the version, unencrypted metadata may be visible, but spending requires the password or the seed.
Identify the originating version first. Very old formats are sometimes best read by an intermediate version before upgrading the file.
Check the script type. The same seed produces different addresses for legacy, p2sh-segwit and native segwit, and Electrum lets you choose.
Describe the wallet, what happened and what information you still have. You will get an honest assessment of whether recovery is technically feasible — without sending any secret credentials.
